Vector and Raster Images
Step 3
About File Types
Lots of different containers, still only two image types
File type does not reliably indicate image type. Let's say that again with the big red letters...
File type does not reliably indicate image type.
.EPS, .AI, .CDR
These types can, and often do, contain both vector and raster image types.
Of these types, graphic designers most like to see .AI files because that type most likely contains the original art created by the original artist. However, it can also contain garbage, you just have to look to see what's in there.
.JPG, .GIF, .TIF, .PSD, .PNG
These types can only contain raster images. The .JPG and .GIF type are ALWAYS compressed and often taken straight off a website. Graphic designers don't like to see .JPG or .GIF files because they probably don't contain quality art.
Of these types, graphic designers most like to see large .PSD files because that type most likely contains the original art created by the original artist. However, again, it can also contain garbage, you just have to look to see what's in there. So, what should you send?
Simple, whatever you have--making only the following changes, if needed:
- In vector files, convert all fonts to curves
- In raster files, rasterize all fonts
- Optionally, you may compress all files with ZIP except JPG and GIF
We don't accept Microsoft Publisher files.*
Send anything else.
*Microsoft Publisher format is poorly supported in high-end graphics processing RIP software. Please export from Microsoft Publisher to EPS format using the Composite RGB option.
